Le Charmide et le Lysis sont habituellement considérés comme des dialogues " aporétiques ", c'est-à-dire sans conclusion positive, dans la mesure où l'un ne parvient pas à définir en quoi consiste la sagesse (sôphrosunê), et l'autre à identifier le sujet et l'objet d'une relation d'amitié (philia). Or une lecture attentive de ces deux dialogues révèle que le constat d'échec sur lequel ils se terminent ne doit pas être pris au pied de la lettre : il est possible de déjouer les pièges que Socrate tend à ses interlocuteurs, et Platon à ses lecteurs, et de dégager une doctrine achevée sur la nature de la sagesse et sur le fondement d'une relation d'amitié.
