This book introduces the reader to the mathematical theory of liquid crystals. The static continuum theory of nematic liquid crystals and its applications to experiments and liquid crystal displays are developed in the opening chapters. The dynamic continuum theory of nematics is then introduced, including applications to well-known switching phenomena in displays. The static and dynamic theories for smectic C and ferroelectric liquid crystals are also reviewed, together with some elementary applications. The book includes many useful figures and tables, and provides a useful reference text for postgraduates and researchers working in the theory and applications of liquid crystals.
